The President – who is directly elected for five years – appoints a Cabinet. There are no political parties.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">The country is a chain of over 1190 small low-lying coral islands, of which 203 are inhabited. </span><span class="style42">Climate: </span><span class="style13">The climate is tropical with heavy rainfall brought by the monsoon between May and August.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">The tourist industry has displaced fishing as the mainstay of the economy. However, 35% of Maldivians subsist on fish and coconuts. The greatest problem facing the low-lying Maldives is flooding from tropical monsoons and tidal waves. </span><span class="style42">Currency: </span><span class="style13">Rufiyaa.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">Settled from the south Asian mainland, the Maldives accepted Islam in the 12th century. Western contacts began with the Portuguese in the 16th century. From 1887 until independence in 1965 the Maldives were a British protectorate, but the ad-Din sultanate, established in the 14th century, was only abolished in 1968.</span></text>
